Reviewer’s report Title: A comparison of isometric, isotonic concentric and isotonic eccentric exercises in the physiotherapy management of subacromial pain syndrome/rotator cuff tendinopathy: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial

چکیده
Sample size calculation: Can the authors provide means and SDs on which the effect size (of 0.66) is estimated (for the main trial), rather than stating an effect size without any justification? It may be that this effect size is unrealisic, in which case the main trial would be underpowered at 30 per group. A sample size of 12 per group for the pilot study is very small and I am concerned that the justification of only 30 per group for the main trial is not a valid basis on which to justify such a small pilot study.

A comparison of isometric, isotonic concentric and isotonic eccentric exercises in the physiotherapy management of subacromial pain syndrome/rotator cuff tendinopathy: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial
Background Subacromial pain syndrome (SPS) involving rotator cuff tendinopathy is a common cause of shoulder pain and disability. Evidence suggests that structured physiotherapy may be as effective as surgery in this condition with significant improvements demonstrated in trials involving scapular retraining, rotator cuff strengthening and flexibility exercises. Most published programs typicall...
متن کاملAuthor's response to reviews Title: A comparison of isometric, isotonic concentric and isotonic eccentric exercises in the physiotherapy management of subacromial pain syndrome/rotator cuff tendinopathy: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial. Authors:
A well-written abstract that contains the needed information to inform the reader about the intended pilot study, the main goals being (a) determining the feasibility of a future trial and (b) treatment effects. The following are suggestions to improve the Abstract: Comment 1 * Line 38: the authors state the study is to determine "feasibility" but it is unclear what "feasibility" is or how it i...
متن کاملA randomised controlled feasibility study investigating the use of eccentric and concentric strengthening exercises in the treatment of rotator cuff tendinopathy
OBJECTIVES To conduct a feasibility study to compare concentric and eccentric rotator cuff strengthening exercises for rotator cuff tendinopathy. METHODS A total of 11 patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy who were on the waiting list for arthroscopic subacromial decompression surgery were randomised to perform eccentric rotator cuff strengthening exercises, concentric strengthening exercis...
متن کاملThere is Benefit to Strengthen the Rotator Cuff and Scapular Muscles in Patients with Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy? A Research Protocol
Background: Lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) is one of the two most common tendinopathies of the upper limb. An exercise programme consisting of static stretching exercises, isometric and concentric-eccentric training has been recommended for the management of LET. Based mainly on clinical experience, rotator cuff and scapular musculature weakness in LET patients is commonly addressed increasin...
متن کاملEffect of specific exercise strategy on need for surgery in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome: randomised controlled study
OBJECTIVE To evaluate if a specific exercise strategy, targeting the rotator cuff and scapula stabilisers, improves shoulder function and pain more than unspecific exercises in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome, thereby decreasing the need for arthroscopic subacromial decompression. DESIGN Randomised, participant and single assessor blinded, controlled study. SETTING Department...
